ABOUT 3D GEL PLATES
WHAT ARE 3D GEL NUMBER PLATES
3D gel number plates get their distinctive look from a precision process called gel doming. After the
characters are printed onto the plate in the mandatory Charles Wright font, each one is individually
coated with a clear polyurethane gel compound. As this gel cures, it forms a smooth, rounded dome
over each character — giving the plate a visually raised appearance with a glass-like gloss sheen.
The result is a plate that looks distinctly premium compared to standard flat plates, without the full
physical depth of 4D raised acrylic plates. If you want a sleek, refined upgrade — 3D gel is the ideal choice.
HOW THE GEL DOME PROCESS WORKS
Characters Printed
The registration is printed onto the reflective acrylic plate backing using the mandatory Charles Wright font to exact BS AU 145e dimensions.
Gel Applied
Clear polyurethane gel compound is precision-applied over each printed character — forming a perfectly proportioned dome above the plate surface.
Gel Cures & Hardens
The gel cures to a hard, smooth, glass-like finish. UV-stable and weather-resistant. Result: a raised, glossy character that looks and feels premium.
Layer 1 — Clear Polyurethane Gel Dome
The outermost layer. Hard, smooth, UV-stable gel that gives each character its distinctive raised, glossy appearance. Protects the printed layer beneath.
Layer 2 — Printed Characters (Charles Wright Font)
Precision-printed black characters in the mandatory BS AU 145e Charles Wright font. Correct dimensions, spacing, and stroke width. Road legal specification.
Layer 3 — Reflective Acrylic Backing (3mm)
White (front) or yellow (rear) reflective 3mm acrylic plate. The reflective surface ensures legal visibility at night and meets DVLA requirements.
Precision Gel Doming
Each character is individually gel-domed for consistent quality. No air bubbles, no uneven surfaces, no peeling.
UV-Stable Gel
The polyurethane gel compound is UV-stable — it won’t yellow, crack, or fade in UK sunlight over the normal lifetime of the plate.
Weather Resistant
Waterproof, frost-resistant, and car-wash safe. The gel dome protects the printed characters beneath from the elements.

ARE 3D PLATES LEGAL IN THE UK?
Yes — 3D gel number plates are fully road legal in the UK. The gel doming process does not affect
any of the mandatory requirements under BS AU 145e. The characters remain the correct font,
correct size, correct spacing, and correct colour. The gel simply adds a protective dome over each
character. All our 3D gel plates are manufactured by a DVLA-registered supplier and are road legal
guaranteed.
